Background
This is based on my MAPP Capstone from the University of Pennsylvania
Aims
To develop a theory of how to best uncover and use hidden strengths at work. To challenge the positive psychology community to support the uncovering of hidden strengths within individuals who have yet to be successful.
Method
To consider the below and examine research related to the six factors listed under “results,” below:
“Any human anywhere will blossom in a hundred unexpected talents and capacities simply by being given the opportunity to do so.” - Doris Lessing
Is this true? Positive psychology should investigate! What if we seek to uncover the greatest quantity of unused human strengths, where might we look? Does the quote provide a hint?: “any human,” “unexpected.” Where do we not expect strengths, in what humans? Could the greatest quantity of unrealized human strengths reside in those who appear the least capable, those who are unsuccessful?
Results
I came up with my theory: Any human system’s greatest untapped positive potential lies in the (hidden) strengths of those who have yet to be successful. To harness that potential, what constitutes “the opportunity to do so” in the workplace? I propose six factors:
Conclusion
Positive psychology should investigate.
