There is currently limited research exploring structured surf programs and their wellbeing benefits, including limited studies on women in structured surf programs. In the past, women have encountered barriers that have limited their full potential in surfing due to the sport being traditionally understood as a masculine sporting activity. This research study explores the experiences of middle-aged women who have participated in a structured surfing program and the impact on their wellbeing. It also examines the barriers and facilitators for women to participate in structured surf programs, including the role of female-only environments. This study adopted a qualitative approach utilizing an anonymous online survey comprising 20 open-ended questions. Thirty-three females aged 40-72 years (M age = 50.90).  All participants resided in Australia, predominantly from Queensland (36), New South Wales (6), South Australia (4), and Victoria (1). This qualitative data was analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Women’s experiences of surfing lessons were captured by two themes: Theme 1: Surfing is simultaneously liberating, challenging, peaceful and restorative and Theme 2: Co-creating a sisterhood of waterwomen. The elements of structured surfing lessons that enhance women’s experience centred around safety – in the coach and the environment: Theme 3: The qualities of a safe space: coach quality, non-judgement and an all-female environment. Two themes were developed from the data which speak to the wellbeing impacts: Theme 4: Hidden strengths of courage, perseverance, and self-compassion

Theme 5: New wisdom arising about surrendering control, trust, and patience. The study shows that participation may positively influence the overall wellbeing of middle-aged women (physically, mentally, and spiritually).
