What would an economy look like if it was specifically designed to measure and increase human well-being? Increasing human well-being has been identified as a paramount priority for governments, businesses, communities, and individuals. However, the primary global and national economic systems and values may be more reflective of the past than humanity’s current challenges and future potential. This paper considers the foundational elements of the past, present, and prospective future of economics in relation to human well-being backed by the research of positive psychology. In support of progressing well-being through economics, this paper focuses on the contributions of positive psychology research and measurement, philosophical wisdom, and the importance of individual and collective efficacy. There is a growing global movement ready to revolutionize economic design to be holistically regenerative and prospective. The work of positive psychology can further catalyze this movement to measure and increase human well-being.
