Introduction: Parenting a sexual minority child can pose both challenges and opportunities for growth. This study explored the effects of a strength-based parenting (SBP) intervention in parents’ psychological growth and the strength of the parent-child bond. Method: Six parents participated in the intervention. Interviews were conducted before and after the intervention with parents and their sexual minority children, and analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: SBP helped parents change their perception of their child’s identity into a more cohesive and strength-based view. SBP also allowed for greater moments of connection and validation between parent and child, as well as increased a dyadic and coordinated manner of dealing with minority stress. Conclusion: Strength-based approaches hold much potential for supporting growth outcomes for multiple members and relationships within LGB-membered families.
